Paul Kihiu
Paul Kihiu was born in 1954 in a
village known as Gathiga near Nairobi to small scale farming parents. In high
school he started getting serious with art after he discovered that he was quite
good at drawing almost anything. A neighbor showed him the the basics of batik
and in 1978 he went into art full time. It wasn't long before he was exhibiting
his work in various galleries including the famous Gallery Watatu.
He often says that the two artists that inspired him to become an artist were
Rene Fennesy and David Shepherd whose use of color to blend figures against
gentle landscapes gave his art a sense of direction and purpose. However, it's
the people of his homeland that long ago lit a fire beneath him that still burns
today.
He feels that it is his duty to do justice to the African experience through his
painstaking depictions of village life where rich traditions once prevailed.
Like life itself, art is to be felt deep inside and he uses his gift to give us
a visceral glimpse of the way it was not too long ago. Even as the world races
ever forward towards modernity, he believes that nature and culture are timeless
and that is why he is an artist.
I was contacted by Paul Kihiu's
nephew about putting these wonderful batiks on our website a few month's ago -
with our trip to Kenya it has taken some time to put these batiks up. Alas, they
are worth the wait - those familiar with batiks can see that they are unique in
every way: deep rich colors, dramatic style, and exquisite detail very rarely
seen in the batik form of art.
