Ng'ang'a Ndeveni
 |
| Ndeveni and
Todd at The Stanley (Thorntree Cafe), in the heart of Downtown Nairobi |
Ng'ang'a Ndeveni
is a member of the Akamba tribe of Kenya. The Akamba are well-known for their
artistic talents and attention to the details of local Akamba life.
Born 40 years ago, Ndeveni started showing
interest in artwork during his early days of school. Everyday he would take a
pen and paper and create something new. He would take all of his sketches that
he produced (even during school), and show it to his teacher. The teacher
realized that Ndeveni had a lot of innate talent, so he was encouraged to
improve his works. As soon as Ndeveni started to create nicer pieces of art, the
teacher introduced him to leading art galleries in the capitol city Nairobi. One
of the gallery owners recognized his budding talent and offered him work at his
own studio. From this gallery he attained notoriety for his creativity and
attention to detail. From then on he never looked back.
Ndeveni started to produce some of the
highest-quality watercolors ever seen within Kenya art circle. Later on, he
started working with alternative mediums as well, like oils. However, he says of
his own works, "Watercolors give me more satisfaction and joy, and the ability
to put onto paper what is in my head. Every so often I visit game parks and my
tribal homeland to refresh my memories and revive my inspiration."
26 January
'09 - Update: We were out, but now we are topped-up for a while. We
recently met with Ndeveni in Nairobi, in early January '09. He's a artistic
wizard! He talks fast, he's extremely prolific, and he has a passion for his
craft unlike any I have met.
He can talk about one painting, or
even a single animal's posture, and the way the sun reflects off it, the time of
day - for hours. In the painting 'Grazing Zebra in the Maasai Mara Game
Reserve', below, one of the zebras has turned its head in reverse - this
fascinated Ndeveni and he spoke of this particular zebra in great detail! A very
interesting guy - and a great talent!
The titles of the paintings are
written verbatim on the back of each painting, I did not make them up!

Update: 16
December 2005 - I have added the six more Ndevenis below. Of special
interest is the painting of Ahmed the elephant. As Ndeveni wrote on the back of
the painting: Ahmed was the largest and oldest bull
elephant in Kenya and he enjoyed a 24 hour armed security guarding decreed by
the president. Marsabit National Reserve is where he traversed. His remains are
preserved at the Kenya National Museum and his tusks are in the Statehouse
Nairobi.
