One does not escape fate
by running - Ibo of Nigeria proverb What happened to Martin Ngugi? Like so many artists on the Nairobi scene, he dropped off after a successful couple years selling his paintings in the local galleries. As did Simon Mungai, Ngugi just disappeared and nobody knows of his whereabouts. Sadly, many Kenyan artists try to make a go of it, and if their paintings don't sell well enough, even in one month, they have to resort to other forms of survival - putting their skills on the back-burner. This is one of the reasons why we have built this website, to promote these artists and hopefully keep them 'in the paint'! It's easy too see that Ngugi has a amusing originality to his compositions. Vivid colors and characters that, though they are burdened by certain elements, seem to have a good attitude and are carrying-on. Almost all of his paintings are formatted in this way, single stylized people doing a chore or symbolically expressing an emotion. In the cases of these characters, the 'weight of the world', is represented in two distinctly different images, though each having its own gender specific meaning. 28 May, 2005: We've added two new paintings by Ngugi.
