Good is when I steal other people's wives and cattle; bad is when they steal mine - Hottentot of southern African proverb

Njogu

Just who is Njogu? And why do I have so many of his paintings?

Not easy questions, but I will try to explain. Njogu is a popular Kenyan artist for 'the wananchi', or 'the people'. He is a self-taught artist who, though quite prolific, has not acquired a large following. Some that his paintings are too simple and thematically juvenile - but it is this quality of simplicity and emotion that has attracted people to his paintings.

With a naive innocence Njogu portrays daily tasks of the Kikuyu people without agenda. He is never without a keen eye for detail as well as a sense of humor that is reflected in the emotions of his characters.

By the way, Njogu means 'elephant' in Kikuyu, the largest tribe in Kenya. The Kikuyu people often pick a name that matches the immediate characteristics of the newborn baby.  I hope you enjoy the paintings!
