Shake
Makelele
Shake (SHA-kay), was born in Kenya in 1966. After
studies at Kamwenja Teachers College and the Creative Art Center in Nairobi,
Kenya, he struck out on his own and became a freelance painter. In recent years
he has emerged as an artist of great imagination, flair, and a superbly balanced
use of color.
His style is independent and fresh, unencumbered by
academic constraints. Because Shake creates images of the Maasai in original
ways, his name is mentioned internationally and has had exhibitions in Kenya,
Tanzania, and the U.K., and is widely collected in these countries as well and
the U.S.A.
Even his more abstract work, an example of which is
shown here, are brash, colorful, and possess a unique harmony.

It's been a very long time since we have updated the Shake Makelele page! But
we are proud to add this 10 new paintings! They are really original and vibrant,
and reflect a new style for Makelele that we thought might be appealing to the
visitors.
