Lost and Found!

Before heading to Kenya I was doing some inventory work and came across a small cache of undiscovered paintings! I couldn't decide how to post them, so I decided to make a 'Lost and Found' page - they were lost, and now they have been found! Some truly remarkable works here:

Six paintings of Lamu Doors by F. Mitau:

Where were you at the time of the Millennium New Year? Hard to forget! Some of us were on a small island off the coast of Kenya and Somalia called Lamu. On Lamu Island there are no vehicles, there are only mules towing carts and lots of people going here and there. Part of the island is a resort, but it caters to adventurous tourists who can take it a little rougher in exchange for splendorous and unspoiled surroundings.

In my travels there I witness groups of young artists strolling through the Old Towne, making elaborate sketches of the intricate doors of both residences and businesses. Lamu is known for its Arab-influenced architecture, like almost all coastal towns in Kenya. But being an island, the artistic influence is steeped in Arabic culture, as it was the Arabs that eventually influenced the Swahili that settled Lamu Island and made it what it is today.

Mitau was one of those young lads making sketches, and these eventually turned into very lovely detailed paintings:

Three paintings by Samuel Njeru:

Samuel Njeru was born in Meru, Kenya, and is one of four brothers with artistic talent. Njeru studied science in school and college, but art was always his love. In spite of being discouraged to pursue art as a profession by his parents, he kept painting, capturing the beauty of nature and children.

Njeru feels that people do not have sufficient appreciation for the local environment and wildlife, leading to the neglect and destruction of Kenya's natural resources. He hopes that his watercolor paintings will throw light on the beauty that is surrounding us and to help people appreciate Kenya's splendor.

Njeru uses watercolor, pastels and a combination on paper. He does realistic paintings.
